Safety
Reliability
J.D. Power and Associates’ 2023 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Maserati vehicles are better in initial quality than Mercedes vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Maserati above average in initial quality. With 19 more problems per 100 vehicles, Mercedes is rated below average.
Engine
The GranTurismo Modena’s standard 3.0 turbo V6 produces 228 more horsepower (483 vs. 255) and 148 lbs.-ft. more torque (443 vs. 295) than the CLE 300’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid. The GranTurismo Modena’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 108 more horsepower (483 vs. 375) and 74 lbs.-ft. more torque (443 vs. 369) than the CLE 450’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid. The GranTurismo Trofeo’s standard 3.0 turbo V6 produces 167 more horsepower (542 vs. 375) and 118 lbs.-ft. more torque (487 vs. 369) than the CLE 450’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid.
Fuel Economy and Range
An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the GranTurismo’s fuel efficiency. The CLE doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.
Tires and Wheels
For better ride, handling and brake cooling the GranTurismo has standard 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the CLE. The CLE’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.
Suspension and Handling
The GranTurismo has a standard driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads. The CLE’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.
The GranTurismo has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The GranTurismo’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The CLE doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.
For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the GranTurismo’s wheelbase is 2.5 inches longer than on the CLE (115.3 inches vs. 112.8 inches).
For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the GranTurismo is 1.6 inches wider in the front and 1.8 inches wider in the rear than on the CLE.
Chassis
The front grille of the GranTurismo uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The CLE doesn’t offer active grille shutters.
